Katie Holmes has tried to stop her divorce from Tom Cruise turning into a war â" by telling him that daughter Suri must be a priority for them both.
Katie spoke to Tom for the first time since their split after he wished Suri good night.
According to a friend she told the actor: âLetâs just try and get through this for the sake of Suri.
"Itâs not about us â" she has to be our priority.â
A source said: âIt was brief and very civil. Both appreciate that things canât descend into all-out war.
"They are trying to be adult about things not least because there are children to think about.
"Tom and Suri have talked several times since the split so it was only a matter of time before Katie spoke to Tom herself.â
Itâs understood the Mission: Impossible star spoke to Katie on a phone belonging to one of her assistants.
A source said: âItâs not ideal but as long as Tom gets to speak to Suri he doesnât care.
"It breaks his heart to have to speak to her on the phone â" and not face to face â" but hopefully that will change soon.â
The actress is said to have spent weeks planning last Fridayâs divorce bombshell.
She had already set up the New York apartment where she and Suri are living and changed her mobile numbers and email addresses.
Sources said Katie, 33, was desperate to win sole custody of the six-year-old.
The Dawsonâs Creek star has filed for divorce in New York as the courts there look more favourably on sole custody than in California.
Tom, who is expected to file a legal response in California, flew from Iceland to Los Angeles, where he spent his 50th birthday with his adopted children, Isabella, 19, and Connor, 17.
He is said to be very upset that Katie has lodged divorce documents in New York.
His team insist that while they do own the New York apartment, the family only spent time in the city for work or theatre trips. A source said: âThey donât live in New York City. Itâs ridiculous.â
Katie recently told a Âmagazine she was entering a ânew phaseâ of her life.
âI feel more comfortable in my own skin. I feel sexier. I think in my 20s, itâs like youâre trying too hard to figure everything out... Iâm starting to com e into my own. Itâs like a new phase.â
Asked about being Mrs Tom Cruise, she told Elle: âHe has been Tom Cruise for 30 years... I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that.â
A mag source said: âKatie didnât speak about Tom in a lovey-dovey way.
"She deflected the Tom questions and brought them around to her.â

Not in front of the children: By Denise Knowles, Relate Counsellor
COUPLES like Tom and Katie are doing the right thing in putting aside their differences for their childrenâs sake.
It is far better for young people if they can see their parents approaching things in a civilised manner.
Mums and dads are the ones who know their children best and are in the best position to do what is right for them.
If a child in Suriâs situation sees their parents treating each other negatively or fighting, it can cause confusion.
The worst place for children to be is having to choose the side of a parent.
If a break-up is particularly messy it can cause all sorts of problems for them in later life.
