Tom Cruise begged Katie Holmes to fly to Iceland to celebrate his 50th birthday but she spurned his last-ditch attempt to save their marriage.
The snub â€" shortly before their split became public â€" sparked a blazing row over the phone, according to insiders.
Reports say Mission: Impossible star Tom accused Katie, 33, of being heartless but she insisted the relationship was over.
A source close to the couple told Us Âmagazine: “He begged her to go to Iceland for one last try at reconciliation. She refused and a huge fight ensued.â€
The report also said Katie feels as though she is in horror film Rosemary’s Baby â€" in which a woman is impregnated by Satan with the help of a cult.
Katie is thought to be desperate to stop Sc ientologist Tom from allowing their six-year-old daughter, Suri, to become heavily involved in his controversial religion.
Yesterday insiders revealed the pair had endured a series of explosive rows ahead of the split â€" including one where Tom criticised the way his wife was raising Suri.
Sources close to the pair say Tom was angry that Suri had been allowed to wear lipstick and nail polish at such a young age.
But Katie hit back by saying the star â€" who rakes in an estimated £60million-a-year â€" failed to spend enough time with his family
After Katie rejected his request to try to save their marriage, Tom reportedly spent his birthday yesterday flying home to California from Iceland where he has been filming.
His lawyer, Bret Fields, said: “Tactically we can’t say where Tom will file a divorce case and if he’ll be seeking joint custody of Suri.
"We are letting the other side play the media until they wear everyone out and then we’ll have something to say.
“It’s not Tom’s style to do this publicly. He is really sad about what’s happening.â€
Actress Katie, who announced on Friday that she wanted a divorce from Tom, was rumoured to be set to walk away with up to £14million from the five-year marriag e.
But it is now claimed she will receive “virtually nothing†because of a prenuptial agreement.
The only money she will be pushing for is child support though that could still turn into a multi-million pound settlement.
