Your Hackney Weekend backstage pass... All the goss from backstage at Radio 1's festival

As the stars including Jay-Z, Rihanna and Plan B came out to entertain thousands of music fans at Radio 1's Hackney Weekend here's some highlights from behind the scenes.

I got 99 problems but getting cool stuff for nothing ain’t usually one...

But there was no free ride for Jay-Z, Rihanna, Will.i.am and the other superstars at the Radio 1 Hackney Weekend.

Even though they are some of the biggest names in music, the BBC’s purse strings were so tight that the artists had to stump up for their own riders.

Their demands â€" such as thousands of white lilies, scented candles, magnums of champers and doctors dishing out vitamin injections â€" are usually provided for free but the organisers in East London this weekend had to be more thrifty.

My source tells me: “The VIP artists got quite a shock when they were booked. They were told they were welcome to bring an entourage and their families as long as they paid for their fair share of the facilities themselves. To have a rider, they had to fork out £1,000 â€" and that’s per rider.”

Ouch. Still, that’s small change to the headliners on Saturday and Sunday night, with Jay-Z worth an estimated £305million and RiRi clocking in at £46million. Rihanna thrilled fans last night, performing in front of a giant Sphinx on a Egyptian-themed set, and telling the crowd: “Hackney, you’re crazier than they told me!”

Earlier she showed that the price of her rider wasn’t an issue as she stepped out dripping in gold, with giant personalised earrings and a necklace that said “Rick”.

My mole says the BBC gave stars a shopping list of options so they could make their dressing rooms a bit cosier.

The source adds: “A potted plant would set them back £45.”

Potted plant? Well, Rihanna may have asked for a plant but I’m guessi ng it wasn’t of the potted kind... The price tag didn’t stop Jay-Z going to town on some pimpin’ interior designs, though. He opted for brown leather sofas and white carpets. Oh, and pashmina throws to keep him and missus Beyoncé warm on the rainy Hackney Marshes. What, no chinchilla coats, Hova?

And the latest style inspiration for Jessie J is... Beetlejuice.

Nabbing his trousers, Jess, 24, leaped around in the get-up and was joined on stage by B.O.B for her smash hit Price Tag.

Afterwards, she admitted she’d also almost fallen over due to the wet conditions and said: “It’s not easy up here on the stage when it’s raining.” Quite.

No secret Cheryl show

Rumours of Cheryl Cole performing as a secret guest were cleared up by her new best pal Wretch 32.

Her BFF says: “I texted her and asked her if she was coming but she’s filming her video. We’re good friends. She texts me for advice and I text her for advice.” Sounds like a regular agony aunt service.

Kasabian's Serge better known for goal

Kasabian guitarist Serge Pizzorno is turning more heads than he used to... but it’s nothing to do with his music.

The 31-year-old â€" also known as the band’s hairy one â€" has been growing in popularity since scoring a cracking lob at a Unicef Soccer Aid game.

He says: “Weirdly enough, I never really got recognised, apart from by people who knew music and bands.

“But since I scored that goal, cab drivers say to me, ‘Alright, mate!’ I used to be able to walk the streets. Now everyone’s like: ‘There’s that guy who scored that goal.’”

It’s nice to be known for your achievements. But, as a musician, you’d hope it would be for your tunes, eh Serge?

Leap up: Tinie Tempah going for it on the main stage

Tinie doesn't want to get his feet wet

Grime superstar Tinie Tempah is afraid of getting his hands feet dirty, it seems.

The 23-year-old was so worried about getting his new trainers muddy, he got a piggyback from a security guard.

My insider says: “He was concerned about getting them grubby so his minder came over to the stage and turned around and hoisted him up.

“It was clearly prearranged.”

Amazing. Can I have one?

Plan B's rain dance

Born slippy... A heavy mid-afternoon downpour meant that Plan B was sliding all over the stage during his performance.

Afterwards he said: “God decided to open up the skies but we got through. I’ve been in a mood for a while, to be honest, but I’m getting over it now.” And so the dark clouds passed.
